MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART SAN DIEGO TO HOST ART AUCTION 2016 ON MAY 18 IN LA JOLLA

Tuesday, Apr 05, 2016 - 10:19 am

San Diego, CA—The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) will host the 10th biennial Art Auction at its La Jolla location at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, May 18. This year’s growing list of carefully selected artworks have been donated from artists and galleries both locally and internationally. This biennial event is the Museum’s largest fundraiser, providing vital support for educational programs, exhibitions, and art acquisitions.

“We’re incredibly proud to celebrate our 10th biennial auction,” said Hugh M. Davies, MCASD’s David C. Copley Director and CEO. “This event is unlike any other in our city and has become one of the most exciting and highly anticipated nights in San Diego’s arts scene. The 2014 auction garnered more than $1 million to support the institution in just one evening. In addition to providing vital support for our program, this night unifies the regional art collecting community and draws attendance from all over the West Coast, and call-in bids from around the world.”

This year’s auction will offer a range of works, from paintings and prints to drawings and sculpture. Artworks will be on display in the galleries at MCASD La Jolla from Saturday, May 7 through Wednesday, May 18, the night of the auction. Art Auction 2016 will offer both live and silent auctions with items presented in a lively atmosphere accompanied by all-night cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and food stations. This year’s auctioneer is Andrea Fiuczynski, Chairman of Sotheby’s Regional Offices in the Americas.

“Sotheby’s is proud to continue its corporate support of MCASD’s Art Auction featuring works from emerging and established artists selected by MCASD curators sold to benefit the museum’s vibrant acquisitions, exhibitions, and education programming,” said Fiuczynski. “This is always a marvelous evening preceded by a wonderful VIP preview reception and private tours by appointment, truly a well-rounded curatorial experience for the novice and experienced collector alike, all for a great arts and cultural community cause.

Guests at this year’s auction will have exclusive access to special-edition auction paddles created by artist Mel Bochner. These limited quantity paddles are available to Gold Circle ticket purchasers. Gold Circle ticket holders will also be able to preview the works and receive private tours and curatorial counsel, led by MCASD’s Deputy Director, Art and Programs, Kathryn Kanjo at a private VIP Preview Reception at 6 PM on Wednesday, May 11.

MCASD is excited to partner with GiveSmart again, offering mobile bidding for all silent auction items. GiveSmart is a smart phone application that will allow both local and remote bidding in real time. The silent auction will be open for bids via GiveSmart beginning Wednesday, May 11. Remote bidders should note that select silent auction items, determined the evening of the event, will feature live closings. For more information and to download GiveSmart, visit www.mcasd.org.

The evening will begin at 6:30 PM with a hosted bar and ample food stations as guests enter their silent auction bids. The live auction will begin at 8 PM, after which Fiuczynski will conduct a live closing of select silent auction works to conclude the evening.
